May
the Force---I mean, Farm Be
With You! Are you a “Star Wars” fan?
Well, by now, if you are a “Star Wars” fan,
(like everyone in my family), you have been to
the theater and have seen Star Wars: Episode
III: Revenge of the Sith. But, have you been
to www.storewars.org and
seen Store Wars: Episode: Contacting the Organic
Rebellion? If you haven’t yet seen this
great short internet flash movie produced by the Organic
Trade Association, click the link now and take
a stress-relief break out of your day.
You will really enjoy it, and may even learn something
about the benefits of choosing organic foods. After
the movie, stay at the site and learn the “Ways
of the Farm. ” I did and here’s a sampling
of what I learned:
The
Organic Trade Association suggests choosing organic
products to minimize exposure to Persistent Organic
Pollutants (POP’s). Studies have shown
that U.S. consumers can experience up to 70 daily
exposures to residues from POP’s through their
diets. The use of POP’s is forbidden in organic
agriculture. Consumers can reduce their exposure
to POP’s by purchasing the organic alternatives
to the Top TEN foods found most likely to be contaminated
with POP’s: 1) butter, 2) cantaloupe, 3) cucumbers/pickles,
4) meatloaf, 5) peanuts, 6) popcorn, 7) radishes,
8) spinach, 9) summer squash, & 10) winter squash.
In addition, selecting organic fruits and vegetables
can be a sensible choice, since studies have found
that conventionally grown fresh produce is three
to four times more likely to contain one or more
pesticides than organic produce. Government tests
show that conventional apples, pears, peaches, nectarines,
strawberries, cherries, celery, spinach and sweet
bell peppers are the foods most likely to be contaminated
with one or more pesticides. Choosing organically
grown fruits and vegetables can significantly decrease
the frequency and level of dietary exposure to pesticides.
MAY THE FARM BE WITH YOU!
