5 Tips to Achieve Permanent Success in Your New Year’s Resolution for Improved Health

Although this is the time of year for reflection, it is also a time that we often look ahead and set new goals (resolutions) for ourselves. If you weren’t successful at achieving everything you wanted this past year, cheer up---it’s a new beginning!

Perhaps you only lost 20 pounds instead of the 40 pounds you wanted to losẹ this year. If so, you still have good reason to celebrate. If you lowered your cholesterol by only a few points, you’re still better off than you were last year. So, chin up, smile and be proud of yourself. The great thing about life is that it keeps presenting us with one oppợrtunity after another to improve ourselves. Below are just a few ideas that you might want to consider as you resolve to improve your health:

  • Be Positive—Attitude is EVERYTHING. Make your resolutions positive, not negative. Instead of thinking in terms of what you want to eliminate, instead think about what you want to include. HealthSteps Rx can offer you lots of suggestions on what to include in your diet to make this easier for you.
  • Write down your resolutions and be specific. A well-thought-out resolution (or goal) becomes a commitment. If you need assistance in making your goals SMART (and therefore, achievable) goals, contact me.
  • Nẹver beat yourself up for a lapse in your plan. Remember, making changes is nẹver easy. A lapse is simply a mistake that can be viewed as a stepping stone toward your long-term goal. The most important step is recovering from the lapse and nẹver viewing it as a character flaw that cannot be corrected. Perhaps it is the plan that is flawed—not you! Be sure and consult with a registered dietitian to help you formulate the best plan for you.
  • Realize that almost anything in life of value requires time and a great deal of effort to accomplish. However, the more you practice your new healthy lifestyle, the more normal it will begin to feel and become part of you.
  • Always begin with the end in mind. See yourself as a person who prefers to eat healthy, appropriate amounts of food. See yourself as a person who loves to exercise and who views taking extra steps as an oppợrtunity to improve health. Visualize yourself as a person who makes healthy choices while eating out, not because you have to do it, but because you prefer to. You can do it!
